Oksana Mas

By (author) Achille Bonito Oliva

| book description |

This title offers a superbly illustrated overview of the stunning work of Ukranian artist Oksana Mas for the 2011 Venice Biennial. During Easter celebrations in the Ukraine, people from all walks of life create their very own works of art in the form of traditional Krashenki - painted wooden eggs. In her installation for the 2011 Venice Biennial, Ukranian artist Oksana Mas used dozens of individual Krashenki to create a veritable architecture that evokes a mosaic where the single elements, made of the drawings on the eggs, tell stories of sins and dreams of redemption, hope in the future and a yearning for purity in the form of initiation into a new life, the full life heralded by the Easter egg. Oksana Mas has 'cross-pollinated' modern sculpture with mosaic and has made its structural characteristics yield to an artistic expression that is never geometric and elementary but both elastic and fluid.
