| book description |
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION ""Literally speaking, Villoro is a Mexican journalist and literature professor. But when he writes about soccer, those titles are insufficient. In tackling 'the beautiful game, ' the author becomes a poet and a critic, a philosopher and a historian, a keen observer and a devoted fan,"" Kirkus Reviews. Juan Villoro's chronicles of soccer alternate between the lively tone of conversation and the epic recovery of great plays: ""The game happens twice, on the field and in the mind of the audience. Dios es redondo seeks to place itself at this crossroads. It is not a history of the sport nor an assessment of its achievements, but a narrative exploration of the passions it arouses."" Dios es redondo received the International Manuel Vázquez Montalbán Prize in Barcelona, marking the author's consecration as a chronicler of soccer passion and of the faithful who renew their devotion with every goal. Here Villoro delves into the planet's greatest spectacle and shows why FIFA has more members than the UN. A central figure in this gallery of portraits is Diego Armando Maradona, the most extravagant star of the pitch.
