Die vielfach beschworene «Identitätskrise» der gegenwärtigen Erziehungswissenschaft verweist auf ein sachliches Substrat: den Konflikt unvereinbarer theoretischer Grundannahmen («Subjektmodelle»), die einerseits der empirisch-pädagogischen Forschung und andererseits der Theorie pädagogisch-praktischen Handelns zugrundeliegen. Problemgeschichtlich verweist dieser Konflikt auf die Trennung von theoretischer und praktischer Vernunft bei Kant; obwohl Kant glaubte, in der kritischen Auflösung der «Freiheitsantinomie» den Widerspruch gelöst zu haben, scheint für die Pädagogik - angesichts ihres besonderen Wissenschaftscharakters - der Widerspruch bestehen zu bleiben (das zeigt u.a. auch die aktuelle, systemtheoretische Reformulierung des Problems). Eine Analyse der kantischen Auflösung der Freiheitsantinomie zeigt, daß sich der Widerspruch dennoch lösen läßt und die Lösung den erkenntnistheoretischen Rahmen für eine «verstehende» Methodologie empirisch-pädagogischer Forschung abgibt.
