Die spanische Morphologie hat (ebenso wie die der anderen romanischen Sprachen) seit ihren Ursprüngen eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Wandlungen erfahren. Im Bereich der Verben sind hier u.a. bestimmte Formen der Vergangenheitstempora betroffen: Vielfach sind die aus dem Latein stammenden ""starken"" (d.h. stammbetonten) Perfektformen der 1. und 3. Person Singular, die im Altkastilischen noch zum Paradigma vieler Verben gehörten, durch ""schwache"" (endungsbetonte) ersetzt worden. Bei den Partizipien haben ähnliche Veränderungen stattgefunden. Heute weisen nur noch wenige Verben starke (""unregelmäßige"") Formen auf. Diese erweisen sich allerdings gegenüber allen Wandlungstendenzen als resistent; was auch für ihre Derivate gilt. Von einem umfassenden Trend zur morphologischen Regularisierung der Verbformen kann also keine Rede sein. Die morphologische ""Unregelmäßigkeit"" erfüllt offensichtlich ganz im Gegenteil wichtige Funktionen in der Kommunikation, die ihre Bewahrung begünstigen.
