Die politische Sozialisation von Kindern beginnt bereits im Vorschulalter. Die Autorin untersucht, wie dieser Sozialisationsprozess im Kindergarten der DDR gestaltet werden sollte und welche Rolle dabei das kulturelle Konzept «Heimat» bzw. «sozialistische Heimat» spielte. Hierfür wertet sie neben pädagogischer Fachliteratur aus der DDR auch Kinderlieder und Bilderbücher aus. Zu den zentralen Aspekten des Heimatbildes, welches Kindern und Erzieherinnen in diesen Texten präsentiert wurde, gehören insbesondere die technologische und gesellschaftliche Modernität der DDR, was die Autorin anhand von zahlreichen Beispielen verdeutlicht. Sie zeigt zudem auf, dass sich entsprechende politisch geprägte Botschaften vielfach auch in Materialien erkennen lassen, die auf den ersten Blick unpolitisch erscheinen.
