Die Arbeit stellt sich die Frage, ob Schiller durch seine philosophischen Schriften der 1790er Jahre als politischer Schriftsteller verstanden werden kann. Ideengeschichtlich wird dabei Schillers Werk bis 1796 untersucht. Zu dieser Zeit pflegt er engen Umgang mit Wilhelm von Humboldt und Carl von Dalberg. Ihre Diskussionen drehen sich um die Geschehnisse in Frankreich, das kurz nach der Revolution darum bemüht ist, eine neue Staatsform zu etablieren. Beide Politiker verfassen Schriften, die sich mit dieser Thematik beschäftigen und bitten Schiller, an der Diskussion teilzunehmen. Die Arbeit versteht seine ästhetische Erziehung als einen solchen Versuch, in dem er die Komplexe Ästhetik und Politik in Berücksichtigung seiner anthropologischen Ansichten miteinander in Beziehung setzt.
