Die westeuropäische Wahrnehmung Griechenlands stand um 1800 im Spannungsverhältnis zwischen der Idealisierung seiner Antike und der relativen Unkenntnis des «realen» Landes, das seit dem 15. Jahrhundert zum Osmanischen Reich gehörte. Britische Reisende waren in Griechenland mit Persönlichkeiten wie Lord Elgin und Lord Byron besonders prominent vertreten. Gleichzeitig war es die britische Kunsttheorie, deren ästhetische Kategorien die so genannte «Wiederentdeckung» und damit eine Konfrontation von Erwartung und Erfahrung Griechenlands im Bild prägte. «Hellas» erhielt in den Zeichnungen von reisenden Künstlern eine neue Gestalt. Die visuelle Aneignung von Landschaft, Monumenten und Folklore definierte das britische Griechenlandbild stilistisch und ikonographisch dauerhaft zwischen Philhellenismus und Orientalismus. Sie erlaubte keine koloniale, jedoch eine ideelle Aneignung des Landes und seines kulturellen Erbes.
