Rilkes Gedichte sind nicht selten mit konkreten Ortsangaben versehen. In den Gedichten der mittleren Werkphase, für die Der Panther und Die Aschanti repräsentativ sein können, wird öfter auf die Topographie von Paris Bezug genommen: Jardin des Plantes und Jardin d'Acclimatation. Beide Anlagen haben kulturgeschichtliche Bedeutung, die auch in die Aussage der Rilke-Gedichte programmatisch aufgenommen ist. Über lokale und zeitgeschichtliche Zusammenhänge hinaus tritt in diesen lyrischen Texten der Vorgang der Wahrnehmung von Welt und Umwelt auffällig hervor. Mit Blick auf die zeitgleich und in Kontakt mit Rilkes Werk sich entwickelnde Biosemiotik von Jakob von Uexküll ergibt sich ein neuer Zugang zu Rilkes Konzept des «Weltinnenraums».
