Nach dessen Kernaussage stellt das Fehlen vollständiger wissenschaftlicher Sicherheit über schädliche Kausalbeziehungen keine Rechtfertigung für das Unterlassen von Schutzmaßnahmen mehr dar. Die Arbeit vollzieht die Entwicklung des Vorsorgeprinzips nach, untersucht die unterschiedlichen Vorsorgedefinitionen und versucht, eine Anleitung für die praktische Umsetzung von Vorsorge im Rahmen der Verwaltung der biologischen Vielfalt zu geben. Die Arbeit schließt mit einer Fallstudie zur Vorsorgeanwendung durch die Organisation zur Erhaltung der Lachse im nordatlantischen Ozean.
