Europa unterlag in der Zeit vom 11. bis zum 13. Jahrhundert einem tiefgreifenden Wandel. Er brachte neue und pragmatische Formen der Schriftlichkeit hervor. Diese Arbeit nimmt die erste laikale Stadtgeschichtsschreibung des Hochmittelalters in den Blick: die Genueser Annales Ianuenses. Sie wurden in der Mitte des 12. Jahrhunderts vom genuesischen Politiker Caffaro vorgelegt. Dadurch schuf er eine neue Form der politischen Memoria. Unter den Bedingungen einer Stadtregierung mit jährlich wechselnden Konsuln wurde mit den Annales ein politisches Herrschaftswissen schriftlich fixiert, das in den wechselvollen Kämpfen der Seehandelsstadt während der Barbarossazeit nützlich sein sollte. Dieser politisch-pragmatische Aspekt wird für Caffaro und seinen direkten Nachfolger Obertus untersucht.
