Aufgrund des starken Anstiegs der Direktinvestitionen und damit der Aktivitäten der multinationalen Unternehmen in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten ist das wissenschaftliche Interesse an ihnen stark gestiegen. Die vorliegende Untersuchung gibt einen gerafften Überblick über die Gesamtproblematik und stellt im Rahmen eines allgemeinen Gleichgewichtsmodells eine Beziehung zwischen der Theorie der internationalen Direktinvestitionen, der reinen Außenhandelstheorie und der Theorie der multinationalen Unternehmen her. Dabei werden Hypothesen über das Entstehen multinationaler Unternehmen unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Internalisierung unternehmensspezifischer Eigentumsvorteile, z.B. technologisches Know-how, sowie der länderspezifischen Standortvorteile entwickelt.
