Gegenstand der komparatistisch angelegten Monographie ist die Untersuchung der Rolle des deutschen Expressionismus im Werk des bulgarischen Schriftstellers und Kunsttheoretikers Čavdar Mutafov. Während seiner München-Aufenthalte zwischen 1908 und 1925 profilierte sich der bulgarische Intellektuelle als Vermittler vor allem expressionistischer Impulse nach Bulgarien. Mutafovs Expressionismus-Begriff wird vor dem Hintergrund der expressionistischen deutschen Programmatik beleuchtet, seine Affinität zur Groteske in Zusammenhang mit der Blüte dieser literarischen Form im deutschen Expressionismus gebracht. Im Mittelpunkt der Arbeit steht die Analyse der intertextuellen Beziehungen zwischen Mutafovs dekorativem Roman Dilettant und seinem literarischen Vorbild, Carl Einsteins frühexpressionistischem Werk Bebuquin.
