In his ""World History of the Jewish People"", which appeared in German for the first time between 1925 and 1929, the Russian-Jewish historian Simon Dubnow presented the narrative of a shared Jewish past. In contrast to previous representations, he no longer tried to justify this religiously, but secularly. The focus was not on a modern nation-state, but on a diasporic way of life, not a limited community, but a transterritorial minority. With Dubnow's diaspora nationalism, Anke Hilbrenner presents a previously little-known alternative to conventional national histories. It reconstructs and interprets both the conceptual side of Dubnow's historiography as well as its concrete historical context.
