Die Geschichte der Berliner »Galerie des 20. Jahrhunderts« nimmt in den Monaten nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ihren Anfang. Um den Verlust an Werken der »Entarteten Kunst« aufzuwiegen, unterstützte der Magistrat nach 1945 gezielt Ankäufe moderner und zeitgenössischer Kunst. Der Galerie kam beim kulturellen Wiederaufbau somit ein besonderer Stellenwert zu. Auch die spätere Teilung der Stadt Berlin bestimmte die Historie der Galerie und die zuweilen provisorische Unterbringung der Sammlung an verschiedenen Orten. Heute steht ihre ungewöhnliche Entwicklung stellvertretend für eine der spannungsreichsten Phasen in der deutschen Museums- und Zeitgeschichte. Mit rund 1800 Gemälden, Skulpturen, Zeichnungen und Graphiken aus den Jahren 1910 bis 1968 ist die Sammlung in vorliegendem Band erstmals vollständig erfasst. Eine opulente Bildstrecke präsentiert hochkarätige Werke deutscher Künstler und internationaler Meister – von Beckmann, Dix, Schlemmer, Kirchner, Baumeister und Uhlmann bis zu Munch, Picasso, Kandinsky, Klee, Rothko und Bacon. Die einstigen Bestände der »Galerie des 20. Jahrhunderts« sind nun in der Neuen Nationalgalerie und im Kupferstichkabinett zu bewundern.
