Sakramente sind im scholastischen Verständnis Zeichen und lassen sich daher semiotischen Theorien unterziehen, die allerdings mit traditionellen Vorstellungen von Wesen und Wirkweise der Sakramente in Konflikt treten können. Ausgehend von Kommentaren zu den Sentenzen des Petrus Lombardus untersucht Ueli Zahnd dieses Spannungsfeld zwischen Aussagen theologischer Autoritäten und philosophischen Einsichten der Logik, Physik und Metaphysik im späten Mittelalter. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf bisher kaum untersuchten Autoren des 15. und frühen 16. Jahrhunderts, deren vielfältiger Umgang mit der Sakramentenproblematik und dem Zusammenwirken von Philosophie und Theologie eine Kartografierung dieser wenig bekannten scholastischen Epoche erlaubt, die auch gängige Interpretationsschemen etwa zur Spaltung zwischen Nominalisten und Realisten in Frage zu stellen vermag.
