Alexander Hollerbach liefert in wissenschafts- und universitätsgeschichtlicher Absicht Bausteine zu einer Geschichte der Freiburger Rechtsfakultät seit der Gründung der Universität im Jahre 1457. Der Schwerpunkt der verschiedenen Beiträge liegt im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert unter besonderer Berücksichtigung einzelner juristischer Fächer wie Rechtsphilosophie, Kirchenrecht und Öffentliches Recht einerseits, der Entwicklung in der NS-Zeit andererseits. Neben allgemein geschichtlichen und spezifisch fachgeschichtlichen Längsschnitten bilden einen wesentlichen Bestandteil biographische Studien über bedeutende Gelehrte, die in Freiburg gewirkt haben, wie Heinrich Rosin, Fritz Marschall von Bieberstein, Hans Liermann, Hans Großmann-Doerth, Franz Böhm, Fritz Pringsheim, Erik Wolf, Theodor Maunz und Karl Siegfried Bader. Das Werk enthält schließlich auch eine umfassende Bibliographie zur Geschichte der Freiburger Rechtsfakultät.
