Die Arbeit behandelt die Entstehung der Sage vom Sängerstreit auf der Wartburg im 13. Jahrhundert aus drei konzeptionell verschiedenen Ansätzen: den Gedichten 'Fürstenlob' und 'Rätselspiel' und der Vita der heiligen Elisabeth von Dietrich von Apolda. Sie berichtet weiterhin über die literarische Rezeption und Variation der Sage bei Novalis und E. T. A. Hoffmann und bespricht ihre Verarbeitung in Bildern Moritz von Schwinds von frühen Skizzen bis hin zum großen Wartburgfresko. Das Interesse gilt dabei besonders den jeweils implizierten Anschauungen vom Verhältnis zwischen Kunst, Bildung, Religiosität und Gesellschaft. Im Anhang ist Schwinds wichtigste Quelle, die Nacherzählung Ludwig Bechsteins, synoptisch mit ihren schwer zugänglichen spätmittelalterlichen Vorlagen abgedruckt.
