Selten gibt ein Codex so viele geschichtliche Aufschlüsse wie der sog. ""Codex Reuchlin"" zur Apokalypse. Er entstand im 12. Jh. und wurde vor dem Untergang von Byzanz mit höchst aussagekräftigen Marginalien versehen. Johannes von Ragusa erwarb ihn zusammen mit einem bedeutenden Autorenbild um 1435 für das Konzil in Basel. Lateinische Annotationen atmen die Krise dieses Konzils. Reuchlin lieh ihn eine Generation später aus und kommentierte einige Stellen unter Einfluss seines kabbalistischen Denkens. Dann reichte er den Codex an Erasmus weiter. Dieser, der Drucker Froben und ihr Team machten ihn zur Grundlage für den griechischen Apokalypsetext der Neuzeit. Schließlich gelangte die Handschrift nach Neuburg, Oettingen-Wallerstein und Augsburg. Die Beiträge des Bandes stellen all diese Stationen vor. Sie werfen Licht auf die kodikologischen Befunde und die Geschichte von Byzanz, auf die Kunstgeschichte des Autorenbildes und die Theologiegeschichte des 15.-16. Jh., auf Reuchlin, Erasmus und den neuzeitlichen Bibeltext.
