Johannes Gutenberg erfand um 1450 den Buchdruck mit beweglichen Lettern und revolutionierte die Kommunikation damit grundlegend. Mit Hilfe eines neu entwickelten Theoriemodells, dem »Wissensraum«, geht die Arbeit der Frage nach, wie das dadurch entstandene Buchhandelssystem funktionierte. Sie beleuchtet den aktuellen Forschungsstand zum Buchvertrieb in der Frühen Neuzeit und untersucht in einer Quellenstudie die Rolle von Agenten auf dem Buchmarkt im 17. Jahrhundert. Die Analyse des Buchhandels sowie der Gelehrtenrepublik als jeweils eigenständiger Wissensraum verdeutlicht zuletzt die große Bedeutung des Buchvertriebs für die wissenschaftliche und kulturelle Entwicklung der Gesellschaft.
