Die antike Stadt Rom kann als ein Ensemble von Monumenten begriffen werden, als Handlungsraum ihrer Bewohner, als literarische Konstruktion. Kommuniziert wurde in ihr, über sie und durch sie, d.h. durch gezielte Ausstattung mit Bauten und Bildwerken. Die Beiträge des Sammelbandes untersuchen aus der Perspektive verschiedener altertumswissenschaftlicher Disziplinen die Zusammenhänge zwischen den drei genannten Formen der Kommunikation um die Stadt Rom vom Beginn des Prinzipats bis zur Spätantike. Einen wichtigen Schwerpunkt innerhalb des Bandes bilden die Foren, ihre bauliche Gestaltung, ihre Darstellung in der Literatur und ihre Verwendung als Bühne für den politischen Diskurs. Ein zweiter Schwerpunkt liegt auf der literarischen Darstellung kommunikativer Vorgänge innerhalb der Stadt sowie - damit verbunden - der Kommunikation bestimmter Botschaften durch den Autor in rhetorischen, poetischen (v.a. Ovid), philosophischen und historiographischen Texten.
