Achtzehn Arbeiten aus den Jahren 1970 bis 2007, die durch Nachträge auf die aktuelle Forschungssituation bezogen werden, und zwei neue Studien (zu Natur und Eros und zu den Neidhart-Schwänken) diskutieren die wichtigsten Typen und Stationen der deutschen Liedkunst des Mittelalters von Walther von der Vogelweide und den Carmina Burana bis zum Liederbuch der Clara Hätzlerin. Besondere Akzente liegen auf Heinrich Frauenlob und Oswald von Wolkenstein. Die Untersuchungen gehen mehrfach von der Analyse der Überlieferung aus und suchen von da aus Zugänge zu den verschiedensten Problemfeldern wie Aufführung und andere Formen des Gebrauchs, Sprach- und Formartistik, Austausch mit anderen Gattungen, Liebeskonzepte, Wissensverarbeitung und Frömmigkeitshaltungen, Lehrautorität, Autorschaftsbewusstsein und Dichterlegenden. Die Untersuchungen werden durch drei Register (Personennamen und Werktitel, Handschriften, Sachbegriffe) erschlossen.
