Angesichts des alle Konventionen sprengenden Antikengehaltes der Skulptur der drei Pilgerwegskirchen in Jaca, Léon und Santiago scheint sich die Antike in Nordspanien bis in das elfte Jahrhundert kontinuierlich fortgesetzt zu haben. Voraussetzung für diese Bildsprache war die enorme künstlerische Freiheit, die aufgrund besonderer historischer Faktoren entlang des Pilgerwegs herrschte. Die Bildhauer traten in direkten Wettstreit mit antiker Skulptur, und durch das Nachvollziehen eines Orestessarkophags aus dem zweiten nachchristlichen Jahrhundert vermochte es eine einzige Künstlergeneration, den Stil der Romanik nahezu allein aus dieser anverwandelten Antike heraus zu entfalten. Erstmals wird im vorliegenden Band der Gesamtbestand dieser an antiken Formen orientierten Skulptur des elften Jahrhunderts am Jakobsweg betrachtet, die einen neuen Erfahrungs- und Handlungsraum eröffnete.
