Called to Unite Knowledge & Vital Piety: Indiana's Wesleyan-Related Universities

Edited by Michael Cartwright, Edited by Merle D. Strege

| book description |

One of the striking features of the history of higher education in the Hoosier state is that seven of Indiana's private universities were founded by persons and groups associated with the Wesleyan and Holiness traditions of Christianity. As different as these institutions are, Anderson University, DePauw University, Huntington University, Indiana Wesleyan University, Taylor University, the University of Evansville, and the University of Indianapolis all have claimed the Wesleyan heritage as part of their mission and identity. Called to Unite Knowledge & Vital Piety explores how the heirs of John Wesley in six of these institutions have embodied the Wesleyan aspiration to integrate the pursuit of knowledge with faithful living. The contributors probe the past in ways that illuminate the current state of the Wesleyan-related universities of Indiana. This volume also invites further scholarly conversations about how to engage the Wesleyan legacy in the twenty-first century.
