| book description |

For the first time, more than just a handful of readers will be able to study, enjoy and become acquainted with one of the seminal works by Karl Heinrich Ulrichs. Many have been able to read his works in German, but not in Latin. This annotated, easy-to-read translation will satisfy scholars, educators, researchers, historians, activists and biographers hungry to learn more about the life and work of Ulrichs. Volume 3 contains the 26th to 33rd issues from 1893 to 1895. Published to celebrate the bicentenary of Ulrichs' birth in 1825, this three-volume edition contains the full Latin text of Alaudae alongside a translation and contextualising notes. Ulrichs is the first known LGBT activist and the founder of LGBT Studies as a social science, and he was also a Classicist and journalist. As such, he understood the appeal of variety: the issues of Alaudae contain original and contributed poetry and epigrams; stories from the Greek and Latin Classics; descriptions of ancient monuments and their inscriptions; reports on the 300th anniversary of Galileo teaching at the University of Padua; news of earthquakes and unusual weather; serialisations of Ulrichs' own fiction; speeches from university graduations and other festivals and ceremonies; reviews of books, journals and newspapers; examples of German and Italian dialects, and of the use of Latin in different countries; reports of religious ceremonies and political events; notes of his own private excursions and experiences and research. The events mentioned took place worldwide across the UK, Ireland, Europe, North and South America, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Australia.
