| book description |
Porcelain has been produced in England since the eighteenth century. Although early styles often imitated imported Chinese wares, British producers soon developed distinctive styles of their own, reflecting the fashions of the day. In its heyday, British porcelain was made by dozens of manufacturers throughout the UK, and amongst those were many well known names such as Bow, Chelsea, Coalport and Minton. Sadly, today only a few of these distinguished names remain, but despite the survival of Royal Crown Derby, Royal Worcester and Spode, Derby is the only factory still manufacturing pots on site. John Sandon takes a nostalgic look through the shelves of British porcelain history over 250 years, detailing the many beautiful and varied styles and designs and the famous producers that made them. Illustrated with fine examples of British porcelain which can be found in many museums and stately homes, this title is an ideal introduction for any collector of porcelain.
