Another method is the trickling filter process, which uses a bed of rocks of other materials to support microorganisms that break down organic matter. (d) Tertiary treatment: This is an optional stage that can be used to further remove nutrients, pathogens, and other pollutants from the wastewater. Common methods include sand filtration, membrane filtration, and disinfection with chemicals like chlorine or ultraviolet light.
