| book description |

This collection brings together leading experts on the politics and constitution of Northern Ireland to explore and analyze aspects of the 1998 Belfast Agreement. For many, the agreement represented a subtle, inclusive and pluralist bargain, for others it was tantamount to a shoddy exercise in betrayal - whether of the Union or, conversely, of the republican project. The rival interpretations of agreement are analyzed critically by a number of the contributors who focus on the motives of its negotiators, and the roles performed both by the British and Irish governments and a number of international actors, notably the United States and South Africa, in forging the deal struck on 10 April 1998. The more immediate provenance of the agreement is complemented by a comparison with its often vaunted predecessor, the 1973 Sunningdale Agreement, while the underlying ""consociational plus"" design of the 1998 agreement is explained, and its legislative implementation is set within the context of multi-layered government and cross-cutting constitutionalism ushered in by the UK's wider devolution process.
